The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, has emerged President of the Board of Governors of the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development, ACMAD.
Anosike won the four-year mandate on September 10, 2026, in Cotonou, Benin, during the 24th Ordinary Session of the ACMAD Board of Governors.
The session took place alongside the 22nd African Climate Outlook Forum, ACCOF22, bringing together members of the board and key institutional partners to review the centre’s progress and chart its strategic direction.
As board president, Anosike will lead efforts to strengthen ACMAD’s governance, partnerships and delivery of climate services across Africa.
His new role also places him at the centre of efforts to expand the use of weather and climate information for sustainable socio-economic development on the continent.
The election comes as African countries face growing weather and climate risks. It also coincides with efforts to strengthen early warning systems under the United Nations Early Warnings for All initiative.
Through his leadership, Anosike is expected to support stronger cooperation among African meteorological institutions. The goal is to improve preparedness and response to climate-related threats while protecting lives and property.
NiMet said the development reinforces Nigeria’s position in Africa’s meteorological community. It also reflects the country’s commitment to advancing reliable weather and climate services across the continent.
The ACMAD meeting also featured senior officials from the centre, the African Union and the Beninese government.
They included ACMAD Director-General, Dr. Ousmane Ndiaye; the centre’s Vice-President and Director of Niger Meteorological Services, Dr. Adamou Aïssatou Sitta; and Mr. Harsen Nyambe, Director of the African Union Commission’s Department of Sustainable Environment and Blue Economy.
Benin’s Minister of Living Environment and Transport, in charge of Sustainable Development, H.E. Georges Alé, also attended the high-level opening.
