Iran Appoints Khamenei’s Son, Mojtaba as New Supreme Leader

Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei

Iran has named Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader following the reported killing of his father, Ali Khamenei, in a joint strike by United States and Israel that has intensified tensions across the Middle East.

Iranian clerics announced Mojtaba’s selection on Sunday after deliberations by the powerful Assembly of Experts, the body constitutionally mandated to appoint the country’s supreme leader.

The development comes barely a week after Ali Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic for nearly four decades, was killed during the early phase of the ongoing regional conflict that erupted late February.

Mojtaba Khamenei, though never elected to public office, has long been regarded as an influential figure within Iran’s political and religious establishment.

Over the years, he cultivated close ties with the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and maintained a strong presence within his father’s inner circle.

Analysts say his emergence could signal the continued dominance of hardline elements within Iran’s ruling structure at a time when the country faces one of the most severe crises since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Before the announcement, members of the Assembly of Experts had indicated that a consensus had been reached on the successor, hinting that the leadership path established by the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ruhollah Khomeini, and continued by Ali Khamenei would remain unchanged.

Ali Khamenei had ruled Iran for 37 years after succeeding Khomeini, who led the revolution that overthrew the monarchy in 1979 and established the Islamic Republic.

Meanwhile, the leadership transition has drawn sharp reactions from international actors involved in the ongoing conflict. The Israeli military reportedly warned that any successor to Khamenei could also become a target.

For his part, former US President Donald Trump suggested that Iran’s new leader would struggle to remain in power without Washington’s approval.

Speaking in a media interview, Trump said the war could continue until Iran’s military and ruling structure were dismantled, adding that the country’s next leader would not “last long” without US backing.

Iranian authorities have strongly rejected any suggestion of foreign involvement in the selection process. Officials insist that the choice of the country’s supreme leader is an internal matter to be decided solely by Iranians.

The Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, also dismissed the remarks, stressing that the future of Iran would be determined by its people and institutions rather than external pressure.

The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei is expected to shape Iran’s political direction as the country navigates escalating conflict and mounting international scrutiny.
