Passengers Stranded as Kaduna-Abuja Train Collides With Another

Hundreds of commuters were left stranded on Monday morning when an Abuja-bound train from Kaduna collided with another train along the busy Kaduna–Abuja rail corridor, forcing authorities to suspend operations.

The crash occurred during the early morning rush, raising fresh concerns about safety measures and the reliability of the signaling system on one of Nigeria’s busiest rail lines.

Passengers on board reported that the train departed Kaduna on schedule but soon ran into either a stationary or oncoming train. Witnesses described a sudden, violent jolt that brought both trains to an abrupt halt.

One passenger, speaking via social media, said: “We were moving at a steady pace when there was a loud bang and the train suddenly braked. We later realized we had hit another train on the same track. Everyone is shaken, but we are waiting for official word.”

Another commuter, Sada Malumfashi, described the scene as chaotic, noting that “people got hit and most are bleeding and severely injured.”

Some passengers reported that communication from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) was minimal, leaving travelers uncertain about the next steps.

Preliminary information suggests there were no fatalities, though significant damage was sustained to the train engines and carriages. Emergency response teams and security personnel were immediately deployed to evacuate passengers and secure the site.

The incident has prompted urgent questions about the Digital Signaling System designed to prevent two trains from occupying the same track simultaneously.

Experts say such collisions often indicate either a communication lapse between train drivers and the control center or a malfunction in the automated signaling equipment.

The NRC is yet to release a formal statement on casualties or the cause of the collision. Authorities have assured the public that investigations are underway and that rail services will resume once safety checks are completed.
