Operation Safe Kugbo Eases Traffic, Cuts Crash Risks on Nyanya Route — FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said its ongoing enforcement under Operation Safe Kugbo is already yielding positive results, with improved traffic flow recorded along the busy AYA–Nyanya–Kugbo route in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking on Monday, the Corps Public Education Officer, Felicia Kalu, said compliance with restrictions placed on articulated vehicles during peak hours has significantly reduced congestion on the axis.
“FRSC personnel are actively enforcing compliance under Operation Safe Kugbo, with restrictions on articulated vehicles during peak hours already improving traffic flow,” she said.
She stressed that the operation remains in force, urging all road users, particularly operators of heavy-duty trucks, to strictly adhere to the directive.
“Operation Safe Kugbo is still ongoing and all road users, especially heavy-duty vehicle operators must comply with the directive for safer and smoother movement within the FCT,” Kalu added.
The AYA–Nyanya–Kugbo road is one of Abuja’s busiest entry and exit routes, linking the city centre with densely populated suburbs and neighbouring Nasarawa communities such as Karu.
Over the years, the route has gained notoriety for heavy traffic gridlock, frequent accidents, and delays often stretching for hours, especially during rush periods.
Road safety data and media reports over the years indicate that numerous lives have been lost on the route due to reckless driving, brake failures involving trucks, and the dangerous mix of heavy-duty vehicles with smaller commuter traffic.
Several fatal crashes involving fuel tankers and trailers have also heightened safety concerns among commuters.

The latest update builds on earlier efforts by the FRSC to sanitise traffic along the route.
National Periscope had previously reported that the Corps commenced enforcement of truck movement restrictions during peak hours under Operation Safe Kugbo, following a directive from the Corps Marshal after a critical review of recurring accidents and congestion on the road.
At the start of the exercise, enforcement teams reportedly restricted dozens of articulated vehicles from operating during designated hours, with officials noting high compliance from drivers and transport stakeholders.
Kalu reiterated that the initiative is part of broader efforts to prevent road crashes and improve mobility within the FCT.
She said, “Sustained enforcement will remain critical to ensuring safer and more efficient movement,” adding that the Corps would not relent in its mandate to protect lives and property.
The FRSC also called on residents and commuters to support the initiative by complying with traffic rules and reporting violations, insisting that road safety remains a shared responsibility.
