FRSC Confirms Two Dead, Three Injured in Ibadan Multiple Crash

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that two persons were killed and three others injured in a multiple road crash in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday around 1:30 p.m., took place along the Challenge–Gate axis at Bere under the Oluyole Unit Command.

In a statement signed on Wednesday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Felicia Kalu, the crash involved six vehicles, including a DAF tanker and five tricycles.

According to the FRSC, a total of 11 persons were involved in the accident. “Out of the number, three sustained varying degrees of injuries, while two persons, one male adult and one female adult, were killed,” the statement said.

The corps noted that its operatives responded swiftly by evacuating the injured victims to nearby hospitals, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at Adeoyo Hospital morgue. The damaged vehicles were also cleared from the road to restore traffic flow.

Preliminary investigations attributed the crash to excessive speeding, which caused the tanker driver to lose control and ram into the tricycles.

Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed concern over the recurring rate of speed-related accidents across the country.

“Speeding remains a silent killer on our highways. Many drivers underestimate its devastating effect, yet it continues to account for the highest number of deaths recorded from road traffic crashes,” he said.

He added that “no journey is worth the loss of human lives,” urging motorists to prioritise safety over speed.

Mohammed also cautioned commercial and heavy-duty vehicle drivers to maintain control and adhere strictly to speed limits, particularly in busy urban areas.

He further called on fleet operators to strengthen driver training and enforce compliance with road safety regulations, while advising tricycle operators and other vulnerable road users to remain vigilant and avoid risky manoeuvres.

The FRSC reiterated its commitment to ensuring safer roads and reducing fatalities through sustained enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
