FRSC, Beer Industry Renew Five-Year Pact to Tackle Drink-Driving

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Beer Sectoral Group have renewed their partnership with a fresh five-year agreement aimed at curbing drink-driving and promoting responsible alcohol consumption among motorists nationwide.

The renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in Abuja, signals a stronger push by both the public and private sectors to address one of the leading causes of road accidents in the country.

According to a statement on Monday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, the agreement is designed to combine enforcement with advocacy in a coordinated effort to save lives on Nigerian roads.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, and the Chairman of the Beer Sectoral Group, Thibaut Boidin, formally signed the pact at the FRSC National Headquarters on April 20, 2026.

The FRSC described the initiative as a decisive step toward eliminating drink-driving, noting that it would involve sustained public awareness campaigns and targeted interventions across the country.

“This is a deliberate, joint offensive against a major cause of road crashes in Nigeria,” the statement said, adding that the partnership would focus on changing attitudes toward alcohol consumption and driving.

Under the agreement, the FRSC will deploy its enforcement capacity and data-driven strategies, while the Beer Sectoral Group is expected to leverage its industry reach and resources to drive awareness and behavioural change.

The statement stressed that the collaboration would intensify nationwide campaigns aimed at discouraging motorists from driving under the influence of alcohol.

“The message is clear: drink responsibly or do not drive at all,” it added.

Industry leaders present at the signing included the Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria Plc, Girish Sharma, and the Chief Executive Officer of International Breweries Plc, Nicholas Kade, alongside other stakeholders.

Both parties expressed optimism that the renewed partnership would lead to a reduction in road traffic crashes linked to alcohol consumption, while fostering a culture of safety among drivers.

The initiative comes amid ongoing efforts by authorities to strengthen road safety measures and reduce fatalities on Nigerian highways.
