No fewer than 16 persons have lost their lives in a fatal road accident along the Lokoja–Okene highway in Kogi State.
The crash, which occurred on Friday morning near Aku village around the Osara axis of the busy highway, also left six other passengers injured.
According to security and traffic reports cited by counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the accident involved a Toyota Hiace bus carrying 22 passengers from Jos, Plateau State, to Lagos.
The vehicle, bearing registration number BUU 17 ZD, was said to have lost control at high speed before plunging beneath a bridge.
Preliminary findings linked the accident to driver fatigue.
“Sixteen occupants, comprising 15 males and one female, died in the incident, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” the report stated.
Emergency responders and security personnel reportedly arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a distress call and evacuated the injured victims to medical facilities in Osara and the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja for treatment.
The remains of the deceased were deposited at the Ankuri Mortuary in Lokoja.
The latest incident has again raised concerns over frequent accidents on the Lokoja–Okene highway, a major transit route connecting northern and southern parts of the country.
Authorities urged motorists to obey speed regulations, avoid fatigue during long-distance trips and adhere to road safety measures to reduce road crashes and fatalities.
