96-Year-Old Woman Dies After Alleged Assault by Granddaughter

A 96-year-old woman, Hajiya Umma Husaini, has died after she was allegedly attacked by her granddaughter in Daura Local Government Area of Katsina State, triggering shock and grief across the community.

The incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Saturday, has left residents struggling to come to terms with the violent death of a woman widely described as peaceful and harmless.

According to reports by Daily Trust, the deceased was allegedly struck with a mortar by her granddaughter, identified as Aisha Muktar, at their residence.

Sources said neighbours and family members who responded to distress calls found the elderly woman lying unconscious in a pool of blood.

She was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Daura, for emergency treatment.

A resident familiar with the incident told Daily Trust that the victim had sustained severe injuries and was bleeding heavily before she was taken to the hospital.

Despite efforts by medical personnel to save her life, Hajiya Umma was pronounced dead a few hours later.

Her death has thrown the family into mourning and sparked widespread sympathy in Daura, where she was said to be well-known and respected.

Confirming the incident, her eldest son, Muktar Husaini, described the development as heartbreaking and difficult for the family to comprehend.

“It is true that my mother was attacked and later died at the hospital. We are all in shock because she had no history of misunderstanding with anyone in Daura,” he told Daily Trust.

He recalled that his mother was known for her calm disposition and cordial relationship with members of the community.

According to him, she spent much of her life caring for her family and maintaining peaceful relationships with neighbours and acquaintances.

Relatives said the nonagenarian had endured several health challenges in recent years, including a long battle with diabetes which resulted in the amputation of both legs.

Despite her condition, family members said she remained strong in spirit and devoted to her faith until her death.

News of the incident quickly spread across Daura, attracting sympathisers to the family home as residents expressed sadness over the loss.

The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation is underway.

Police spokesperson, DSP Sadik Aliyu, said the suspect had been taken into custody while detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and the motive behind the alleged attack.

Community leaders and residents have condemned the killing and called for a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.

The tragedy has also renewed concerns about the safety and welfare of elderly persons, particularly within family settings.
