Residents of Ohuhu community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State have rescued two kidnapped villagers after a daring search operation that reportedly forced their abductors to flee deep inside a forest.
The rescue followed hours of pursuit by local youths who mobilised after learning that a widow and a commercial tricycle operator had been abducted while returning from a farm.
The victims, Mrs Onyinyechi Jonathan Ekechukwu and Mr Dennis Okechi, regained their freedom after what community members described as a tense confrontation between the search party and the kidnappers.
Their rescue has drawn attention in a country where many kidnapping victims remain in captivity for weeks or months while families struggle to raise ransom payments.
Narrating her ordeal, Mrs Ekechukwu, a widow and mother of four from Umuawa Alocha in Ohuhu clan, said she had gone to her cassava farm on June 10 and was heading home with her harvest when armed men emerged from the bush and intercepted them.
According to her, the attackers dragged them off a tricycle and marched them into a forest despite repeated pleas for mercy.
“We were already riding home when we were suddenly stopped on the way by armed men who came out from the bush. They dragged us out of the tricycle and took us into the forest,” she recalled.
The abductors, she said, moved them through thick vegetation for several hours before demanding a ransom of N10 million.
She disclosed that the six-member gang confiscated their phones and later ordered them to contact relatives for payment.
Mrs Ekechukwu said the kidnappers became aggressive after she spoke in Igbo while attempting to alert a family member about their predicament.
“They hit me and threatened to kill me because I spoke Igbo with the person I called. I told them I could not communicate properly in English,” she said.
The widow explained that throughout the ordeal she prayed continuously, fearing she might never return home to her children, including a son studying at the University of Benin.
Her fears deepened when one of the abductors repeatedly warned that they would be killed if the ransom was not paid quickly.
The situation, however, changed when members of the community launched a search operation.
According to her, the kidnappers became unsettled after hearing gunshots and noticing torchlights advancing towards their hideout.
“Shortly afterwards, we started hearing gunshots and seeing torchlights. When the youths got closer, the kidnappers became confused. They abandoned us, crossed a river and ran away,” she said.
The rescue team subsequently located the victims and escorted them safely back to the community.
Mrs Ekechukwu described the intervention as an act of courage and commended the youths for risking their lives to save others.
She said the experience left her reflecting on her family and the possibility that she might never see them again.
“My son had called me earlier that day while I was harvesting cassava. I kept thinking about him and praying that I would see him again,” she said.
The widow also alleged that the kidnappers were Fulani-speaking bandits and expressed concern over recurring attacks on farmers and farmlands in the area.
She urged government authorities to strengthen security in rural communities and tackle the activities of armed criminal groups operating in forests and farming settlements.
Residents said the successful rescue has boosted confidence among locals, who have long complained about insecurity and attacks on farmers in parts of the state.
The incident comes amid continued concerns over kidnapping across several parts of the country, where armed groups have targeted commuters, farmers, students and residents, often demanding huge ransoms for their release.
