South African football has been thrown into mourning following the death of national team midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.
The country’s Ministry of Sport confirmed the development on Saturday but did not disclose the cause of death.
Adams was part of South Africa’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring in all three group-stage matches. He started against Mexico and the Czech Republic before coming off the bench in the team’s 1-0 victory over South Korea, a result that secured Bafana Bafana’s first-ever place in the knockout stage of the tournament. South Africa’s campaign eventually ended with a defeat to Canada.
The midfielder endured personal tragedy during the World Cup after his grandmother died a day before South Africa’s clash with the Czech Republic. He was substituted at half-time during that match.
At club level, Adams played for Pretoria-based Mamelodi Sundowns, where he helped the side win the 2025/26 CAF Champions League title after joining the club from Stellenbosch FC in January 2025.
Paying tribute, the South African Football Players’ Union described Adams as one of the country’s brightest talents.
“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer,” the union said in a statement.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, also mourned the midfielder, saying the nation had lost a player whose career was still on the rise.
“Our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international,” McKenzie said.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also extended his condolences, saying his thoughts were with Adams’ loved ones and the wider football community.
“My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates,” Infantino wrote on Instagram.
Adams began his football career in the youth ranks of Stellenbosch FC before earning a move to Mamelodi Sundowns.
He made his senior debut for South Africa against Mozambique in 2022 and went on to earn 13 international caps, scoring twice in the country’s successful qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His death comes just weeks after helping South Africa achieve one of its best performances on the global stage, leaving teammates, fans and the football fraternity mourning the loss of a player widely regarded as one of the country’s emerging stars.
