IGP Disu Seeks NJI Partnership to Strengthen Police Training

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for a strategic partnership between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) to enhance the professional competence of police personnel through specialised legal and judicial training.

Disu made the proposal during a courtesy visit to the National Judicial Institute, where he was received by the Institute’s Administrator, Justice Babatunde Adeniran Adejumo, alongside the Institute Secretary, Mr. Olumo Abdulazeez, and members of the management team.

The police chief said closer collaboration between both institutions would strengthen the administration of criminal justice by equipping officers with the skills required to meet emerging legal and technological challenges.

According to him, the proposed partnership would provide continuous capacity-building programmes for police lawyers, prosecutors, Investigating Police Officers (IPOs) and other personnel involved in criminal investigations and prosecutions.

The IGP identified key areas of training to include criminal justice administration, electronic evidence, cybercrime investigation, digital forensics, human rights, prosecution advocacy and case management.

He also advocated the introduction of executive education and professional certification programmes for police personnel, as well as regular seminars, workshops and joint research initiatives aimed at improving investigative and prosecutorial standards across the Force.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to the rule of law and the effective administration of criminal justice. Strengthening the capacity of our officers through specialised legal and judicial training is critical to improving professionalism and enhancing public confidence in policing,” Disu said.

Responding, the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute, Justice Adejumo, welcomed the proposal and expressed the Institute’s readiness to collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force in advancing professional development and improving the country’s criminal justice system.

He also commended the Inspector-General for establishing a police outpost within the Institute, describing it as a significant step towards enhancing security at the facility.

Justice Adejumo further appealed for deeper collaboration between the NJI and the police to strengthen security architecture within the Institute.

The Force Headquarters said the proposed collaboration reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to building strategic partnerships that promote professionalism, strengthen institutional capacity and improve the administration of criminal justice in the country.
