NiMet Begins Implementation of Balanced Scorecard Performance System
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has commenced a new internal reform process with the introduction of the Balanced Scorecard Performance Management System aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and strategic alignment across the agency.
At a kick-off meeting held at the NiMet Headquarters in Abuja, the agency’s Directors and senior management staff were briefed on the framework and how it will enhance performance management and strengthen service delivery.
Declaring the session open, the Director-General and CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, said the agency is aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the performance bond signed with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN.
“We are starting a new journey at NiMet as we prepare to roll out a Balanced Scorecard Performance Management System,” he said. “It is a global management tool that helps organizations translate strategy into performance. This meeting will help us improve our strategy formulation and create room for enduring creativity in the agency.”
Prof. Anosike also underscored the growing importance of intangible assets such as intellectual property, human resources, innovation, data, and brand reputation in today’s knowledge-driven economy. He said the new system will ensure proper alignment between strategy and objectives, helping staff understand their roles in achieving the agency’s goals.
Founder/CEO of Balanced Scorecard West Africa, Mr. Kayode Sufianu, who facilitated the session, praised NiMet for taking what he described as a decisive step toward institutionalizing a globally recognized performance framework.
“The Balanced Scorecard offers organizations a powerful structure for turning strategy into measurable outcomes,” he said. “NiMet’s adoption of this system shows strong leadership commitment to accountability, innovation, and improved public service.”
Prof. Anosike added that modern institutional value is no longer determined only by physical assets or financial records but by people’s ideas, innovation, customer relationships, and organisational culture. He described the meeting as a preparatory step for the demanding but rewarding work ahead.
He urged staff to embrace performance management as a foundation for better service delivery, noting that while strategy sets direction, successful institutions are defined by their ability to implement and sustain their goals.
