Lawmaker Suspended Over Alleged Assault on Wife

The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended one of its members, Ovat Dickson Agbor, following allegations of domestic violence involving his wife.
Agbor, who represents the Obubra I State Constituency, was suspended after lawmakers deliberated on the matter during plenary, where the issue was formally brought before the House.
The decision followed a petition and growing public concern over an alleged incident in which the legislator was accused of physically assaulting his spouse.
During the session, members of the Assembly strongly condemned domestic violence, stressing that elected officials must uphold high standards of conduct both in public and private life.
After deliberations, the House resolved to suspend Agbor from legislative activities pending the outcome of further investigations into the allegations.
Lawmakers explained that the suspension was intended to create room for a proper review of the claims while protecting the credibility and integrity of the legislative institution.
They also emphasised that the disciplinary measure should not be interpreted as a final verdict on the matter, noting that further decisions would depend on the outcome of investigations.
The development has attracted reactions from civil society organisations and members of the public, many of whom called on the Assembly to take decisive action to address the allegations.
Domestic violence advocates have welcomed the suspension, describing it as a step in the right direction and a signal that accusations of abuse, particularly against public office holders, must be taken seriously.
The leadership of the Assembly said additional actions may follow depending on the findings of the ongoing review and any other evidence that may emerge during the investigation.
