The Kwankwasiyya Movement has dismissed reports alleging that its leader, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, threatened to quit the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) over the alleged substitution of candidates ahead of recent party arrangements.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Habibu Mohammed, the movement described the speculation as unfounded, insisting that neither Kwankwaso nor the group had expressed dissatisfaction with developments within the party.

The group maintained that claims of a planned defection or protest exit were “mere rumours” and should be disregarded by the public.

“Kwankwaso never threatened to leave the NDC. Neither the Kwankwasiyya Movement nor its leader is complaining,” the statement said.

The clarification comes amid reports suggesting that the movement was considering leaving the party following the replacement of some candidates previously aligned with its political bloc.

Those reports had claimed that the substitutions violated an earlier internal power-sharing arrangement within the party structure, sparking tension among stakeholders.

However, the Kwankwasiyya Movement firmly rejected such claims, describing them as misleading and inconsistent with the actual situation on the ground.

According to the statement, the party’s primaries were conducted on May 29 in line with provisions of the Electoral Act and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with winners duly affirmed the same day.

The group further explained that party stakeholders had earlier agreed on a consensus arrangement where necessary, which guided the emergence and submission of candidates without internal disputes.

It added that Kwankwaso had not raised any formal complaint with the party leadership or communicated any grievance to the movement regarding the outcome of the primaries or subsequent substitutions.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement urged supporters and members of the public to disregard what it described as politically motivated misinformation aimed at creating division within the party.

It reaffirmed its commitment to the ideals of the NDC and stressed that its focus remained on strengthening internal cohesion and supporting party structures at all levels.
