Super Falcons Crush Egypt 6-2 to Reach WAFCON Quarter-finals

Nigeria’s Super Falcons booked a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with an emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C match on Wednesday, keeping alive their quest for a record-extending 11th continental title.

The nine-time African champions went into the encounter knowing they needed a convincing win to stand any chance of progressing after a difficult start to the tournament.

They responded with one of their best performances of the competition, overpowering the North Africans in a goal-laden contest to finish the group stage on six points.

The victory, combined with Zambia’s win over Malawi in the other Group C fixture, saw Nigeria advance to the knockout stage on goal difference after all three teams finished with six points.

Asisat Oshoala gave the Falcons an early lead from the penalty spot before Gift Monday doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time.

Egypt reduced the deficit through a penalty deep into first-half stoppage time, but the Falcons quickly reasserted their dominance after the break.

Uchenna Kanu restored Nigeria’s two-goal cushion before Christy Ucheibe converted another spot kick to make it 4-1.

Although Egypt scored again to keep the contest alive briefly, Rasheedat Ajibade calmly converted Nigeria’s third penalty of the evening before Omewa rounded off the scoring in stoppage time to complete a resounding 6-2 victory.

The result marked a remarkable turnaround for the Super Falcons after suffering a shock opening defeat to Malawi, a setback that left their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.

Nigeria’s attacking display against Egypt underlined the team’s determination to remain in contention for another WAFCON crown and extended its impressive record in the competition.

Hosted by Morocco, the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations features 16 teams for the first time, with the tournament serving as one of Africa’s major football championships and a showcase of the continent’s top female talents.

The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals, where they hope to continue their resurgence and move a step closer to reclaiming the African title.
